ZEISS FOR EYE CARE PROFESSIONALS

ZEISS DuraVision BlueProtect UV

The blue-violet light blocking coating from ZEISS.

DuraVision® BlueProtect UV is a coating specifically developed for customers who spend a lot of their time indoors and are exposed to blue-violet light from LEDs as well as TV, computer or tablet screens. ZEISS' blue light coatings for spectacle lenses block specific wavelengths of light, and can help to relieve the eyestrain perceived by the customers which is typically associated with blue light exposure.

  • Superior strength
  • Easy care

Why is blue-violet light relevant to your customer?

  • 90%

of the people who spend three hours or more a day at a computer are affected by computer vision syndrome.1

  • 4.8 billion

people were active internet users as of April 2020, encompassing 59% of the global population.2

  • 73%

of U.S. adults sometimes use a digital device while watching TV – one screen is not enough.3

What is blue light and how can blue light coatings help your customers?

Natural light, i.e., sunlight, contains many types of coloured light. One of the shades of light in the visible spectrum is blue light. It accounts for about one third of high-energy visible light (HEV). Blue light ranges from 390 to 500 nm on the visible light spectrum, which penetrates the eyes easily, passing through the cornea and lens to the retina. Blue light filter solutions such as blue light lens coatings for spectacles are a suitable solution to this problem. By wearing appropriate lenses with a blue light coating, a reduced amount of blue-violet light can enter the eye. Scientific evidence has indicated there are benefits to blue light exposure, however potential associated risks have also been mentioned (referred to as the dualism of blue light).

What is blue-violet light?

What is the dualism theory?

+ Positive side to Blue Light (HEV): Exposure during daytime helps the body to maintain a healthy circadian rhythm. This refers to the body's natural sleep-wake cycle.

- Negative side to Blue Light (HEV): Possible damage to retinal cells.

A closer look: the positive and negative sides of blue light

The range between 390 and 440 nm of the light spectrum is considered to be the potentially harmful part of the HEV spectrum. It is everywhere, although its intensity varies greatly. While a typical LCD computer monitor produces a brightness of 250 cd/m2, a clear blue sky at midday is 32 times as bright. Direct sunlight can be thousands of times as bright.

Facts about blue light

The positive side of blue light

  • Blue light around 460 nm influences melatonin production to regulate the internal “clock” (Circadian rhythm).
  • Blue light (provided during daylight) blocks production of melatonin.
  • More blue light reduces the production of melatonin.

Result: boosts mood and alertness

  • Less blue light increases the production of melatonin.

Result: sleepiness (not ideal during the day).

The negative side of blue light

Extensive exposure to blue light may be harmful.
          • Some research has indicated that blue-violet light may lead to damage and death to the retinal cells.
            • Light energy absorption (“heating”) may damage the retinal cells.
            • Potential damages in the retina may cause toxic reactions.
            • Macular degeneration can be a severe consequence.
          • This photo-induced risk of cell damage is called blue light hazard.
Smartphones emit high levels of blue light. Pictured are multiple people looking at smartphones.

Should customers be concerned about frequent indoor exposure to light sources with a high proportion of blue light?

Customers are now exposed to more blue light than ever before due to modern light sources. Smartphones, LED light bulbs, televisions, computer monitors, e-readers and tablets emit high levels of blue light. The emission of large quantities of blue light is one cause of digital eyestrain.

Blue light filter solutions from ZEISS

Blue light lens coatings and more: ZEISS blue violet light solutions.

ZEISS offers a comprehensive blue-violet light blocking portfolio that meets different consumer requirements for indoor and outdoor activities. The range of products filters different amounts of blue-violet light depending on the activity.

          • DuraVision®  BlueProtect  by ZEISS, a  blue light blocking  coating  for lenses  which partially  filters  blue-violet  light; ideal for indoor activities.
          • Skylet® and  PhotoFusion X by ZEISS  are tinted and self-tinting lenses that block different intensities of blue-violet light,  and also  offer full UV protection.
          • BlueGuard® by ZEISS: The latest in blue light blocking technology, where the blue light filtering properties are incorporated within the lens structure.
          DuraVision® BlueProtect by ZEISS

          DuraVision® BlueProtect by ZEISS

DuraVision® BlueProtect by ZEISS is a unique, high-performance blue light lens coating that offers your customers:

          • An increased reflectance in the blue-violet spectrum of light.
          • Selective attenuation of the blue-violet light passing through the lens.
          • A reduced amount of blue-violet light entering the eye.

DuraVision® BlueProtect coating has a blue light filter which attenuates blue light in the range from 390 to 440 nm. It still lets the “healthy” blue light through that our bodies need, thereby providing greater visual comfort.

In addition to blocking blue-violet light, ZEISS DuraVision  BlueProtect comes with all the premium features of ZEISS coatings, including:

          • A superior hard coat.
          • Easy-to-clean lenses to provide better vision.
          • DuraVision Platinum UV on the backside of the lens.

Always available in clear ZEISS lenses with DuraVision BlueProtect

          • UVProtect Technology

A higher level of UV protection, which enables clear ZEISS lenses to block harmful UV rays up to 400 nm. The same standard of UV protection that premium sunglasses provide.

Anti-reflective vs. blue light coatings: What is the difference?

Both anti-reflective and blue filter coatings are applied to the surface of the customers' lenses and have the advantage of minimising glare. However, blue light lens coatings offer additional protection against blue light. AR coatings do not block blue light.
